Refuse Collections

Refuse collections are a user pays service provided by the Wairoa District Council’s Waste Management Contractor QRS (06) 838 9030. Official refuse bags are available from the following locations:

WAIROA:

    • Write Price Supermarket
    • New World Supermarket 
    • Age Concern 
    • Māhia Avenue Dairy 
    • Riverview Dairy

MĀHIA:

    • Māhia Beach Store
    • Fosters Garage, Opoutama

NŪHAKA:

    • Nūhaka Garage

Refuse bags are available in 4kg or 7kg sizes. Please ensure you purchase the correct bag for your location (Wairoa Township and Frasertown – Urban, all others locations Rural). Prices are as follows:

RURAL:

    • 4kg  $2.10 ea   (Pack of 5 $10.50) 
    • 7kg  $4.05 ea   (Pack of 5 $20.25)

URBAN:

    • 4kg  $1.60 ea  (Pack of 5 $8.00) 
    • 7kg  $2.40 ea  (Pack of 5 $12.00)

Domestic refuse collections take place along the following routes:

    • SH2 from Wairoa to Kotemaori Settlement Rd.   
    • SH2 from Wairoa to Mōrere. The collection point stops at Tunanui Road, Mōrere.   
    • Tiniroto Rd from Frasertown through to Te Reinga and Ruakituri Rd 
    • SH38 from Frasertown to Waihi Road.

Please note that any households living off the SH may bring their refuse to the State Highway for pick-up.

Refuse Collection days are as follows:

    • From Wairoa (but not including Wairoa) to Māhia, including Nūhaka and Māhanga - collections will be weekly on Mondays.   
    • Wairoa township collection is done on Tuesdays.   
    • From Frasertown (and including Frasertown) to Waihi Road - collections will be weekly on Thursdays.    
    • From Frasertown (but not including Frasertown) to Ruakituri, including Te Reinga - collections will be weekly on Thursdays.   
    • From Wairoa (but not including Wairoa) to Kotemaori Settlement Rd, including Mōhaka and Raupunga, collections will be weekly on Fridays.

Recycling

The kerbside recycling collection for the Wairoa Urban area takes place weekly on Wednesdays.

Recycling Bins are available from Council at a cost of $12.

Recycling in the rural areas is on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month and at the following locations:

    • Kotemaori – Kotemaori Hall 10am-11.30am;  
    • Raupunga – Beside the toilet block 12pm–2pm;  
    • Mōhaka – Old pub site 2.30–4.30pm;  
    • Ruakituri – Opposite school 9am-11am (1st Sunday of the month only);
    • Te Reinga – Opposite school 11.30am-12.30pm (1st Sunday of the month only);  
    • NūhakaQRS metal yard 9am-11am;  
    • Māhia – 376 Kaiwaitau Rd 11.30am-2pm.

RECYCLING IS FREE FOR DOMESTIC USERS

We accept the following:

CANS - Rinsed aluminium  & steel cans
GLASS - Bottles & jars (remove the lids & rinse)
PAPER - Newspaper, magazines, junk mail, all other clean paper
CARDBOARD - Flatten all boxes (not milk or drink cartons)
PLASTICS - Types 1-7 (supermarket shopping bags & bread bags accepted)

Bins for recycling are available for $12 at the Council Administration Building, Queen Street, Wairoa.

Wairoa Landfill & Recycling Centre

    • Eftpos is available at the Wairoa Landfill.  ]
    • A $10 petrol voucher will be payable for each car taken to the Landfill for disposal by private individuals.  All other charges in relation to car disposal for private individuals have been removed.   
    • Landfill hours – 11am to 5pm daily (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday), except ANZAC Day when it will be open from 1pm to 5pm and closed 25/26 December, 1 January, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.  Thursdays (starting 14 January 2010) from 9am – 3pm.
    • Charges for general waste increase are $145 per tonne incl GST.  All charges will be rounded to the nearest $0.50.  Green waste charges are $45 per tonne incl GST.
