Connecting and growing our communities.

Thank you to another of our emergency response team

Mike Varley canva

Mike Varley was one of QRS’s emergency response staff this weekend helping reopen State Highway 2 at Turiroa.

With years of experience in asphalt and driveway construction Mike is enjoying working on national roads with civil construction company Quality Roading and Services.

“I’ve been doing private stuff like driveways for 16 years but I have also worked alongside national companies and so I know the protocols and am really enjoying my work here.”

Mike used to work for the highly-regarded family-run company RPL Services Limited, Tauranga, where he worked his way up from entry level paver to job manager with it’s AAA Driveways division.

Mike is very comfortable starting off on the bottom rung at QRS honing the skills needed in roading construction and learning from senior colleagues.

“I’m trying to improve my skills and learn off the older more experienced staff.”

As well as working in an industry that’s familiar to him Mike was keen to work with QRS because of its commitment to social enterprise.

“The reason I came to QRS is because they help the community and that’s like me, I like helping people.”

He and his partner moved to Wairoa in 2021 to be closer to loved ones. He loves the relaxed lifestyle and the chance to spend more time with his partner and their extended blended family which boasts 18 grandchildren.

When he’s not working or spending time with family Mike enjoys working on his home renovations and finding time for some campervan travel and fishing with his partner.
