Youngster has opportunity

Kauri canva

At 16 years old Kauri Gray, Ngāti Kahungunu, is the youngest member of the Quality Roading and Services team but his determination makes him a man with potential.

People and capability manager Jeremy Harker first met Kauri as part of the Wairoa Young Achievers Trust CACTUS programme.

“In Kauri I saw a young man who is resilient and likes to be challenged. I knew what he was capable of and we have offered an opportunity to him.”

CACTUS is an eight-week leadership and life skills training course for people aged between year 9 and 13 run through Wairoa College. Two groups graduate each year.

The course exposes participants to goal setting, self-leadership, teamwork, and physical challenges similar to those done by New Zealand armed forces personnel.

Mr Harker, one of the programme’s volunteer fitness trainers and a former Colonel in the New Zealand Army, says Kauri demonstrated personal strength and teamwork during his time on the course.

“With commitment, there’s no reason why Kauri cannot fulfil his potential at this company. All our staff are offered individual training plans allowing them to acquire new skills and increase their contribution.”

Kauri is working in traffic control, but one day hopes to become a truck operator.
