Well-known former Wairoa Club bar manager Trent Zeilstra has started a civil infrastructure apprenticeship with Quality Roading and Services.

Trent joined QRS in March 2020 after a stint working at a pharmaceutical distribution warehouse in Brisbane and says he loves working outside. “It’s great to be able to see different places every week.”

He contacted QRS after speaking to QRS asset engineer Quintin Baty who recommended he give it a go.

Quintin describes Trent as one of the most trustworthy people he’s met. He says his quiet nature belies a powerful presence and he remembers that Trent never had any trouble managing rowdy patrons at the bar.

Since joining QRS Trent has enjoyed working in and around the region. Helping lay the concrete pads at Rocket Lab was a highlight.

During his time he’s also earned his class 2 licences as well as his tracks, wheels and endorsements.

Trent was asked to be part of QRS’s recruitment video campaign Your Road to Success featuring local staff and Wairoa scenes. The campaign is in response to challenges the civil construction industry faces with attracting new recruits.

“What most people don’t realise is that civil construction and road maintenance is constantly developing as a challenging and diverse career option,” says QRS chief executive Nigel Pollock.

“Those of us already in the industry want to share just how exciting this sector is and the range of work experience available. Trent is a great example of someone at the start of their road to success at QRS.”
