A strong and successful company growing the Wairoa community.
PREMIERE netball player and former lifeguard Sydney Rore is relishing the life skills she’s learning at Quality Roading and Services.
“I like this work because it’s outdoors. And I am learning heaps of different things that I can use around home too.”
Sydney, Tūhoe, Rakaipaaka, joined QRS in December 2020 and in the first few months learned a lot about concreting – so much so that she wants to help her nan with a project at home.
“It feels good. My nan is doing her shed so I think I will be able to help her out.”
Sporty Sydney is a familar face around town. She spent three years lifeguarding at Wairoa Community Centre and for a long time worked at local food favourite Robbies Takeaways.
By 2020 Sydney was keen to swap chlorine for coastline. She came to QRS looking for a job after hearing positive reviews from family members.
“I like lifeguarding but it was hard being inside on a sunny hot day! I would hear about those guys fixing drop outs on Mahia East Coast Rd and think that looks like a cool place to work!”
Sydney has hit the ground running at QRS earning her wheels, tracks and rollers licence and her class 2 learners licence. She says the work is fascinating and she would in time like to move into project management. She’s already indicated she’d like to study civil construction management through industry training organisation Connexis.
When she’s not at work Sydney’s never too far away from a netball court. Part of YMP’s prems netball team, Sydney has helped the formidable side to four wins in her seven years with the squad. She’s the driving force behind the QRS netball team too.
In order to stay fit the 21-year-old (who some people call Muscles!) runs and works out at the gym. She says being fit has helped her manage the physical requirements of working at QRS.
“It meant that when I started here I wasn’t struggling. I like working in the capital division. As you can tell the boys are pretty cheeky but they make work fun.”
