Waste management better left to the experts

Looking after the environmental challenges associated with landfills and recycling are key components of waste management and it needs a company with a greater level of expertise to do it, says Quality Roading and Services (QRS) chief executive Nigel Pollock.

“There are other companies that make waste management their core business and as a result, they’re much better placed to manage Wairoa’s landfill and recycling needs.”

Mr Pollock’s comments come as QRS moves away from providing landfill and recycling services to the Wairoa district.

Seven staff will be affected with QRS’s decision not to re-tender for Wairoa District Council’s waste management contract.

“It’s been a difficult decision for the company because of the impact it has on staff,” says Mr Pollock.

The waste management contract includes the landfill, recycling centre, green waste, town and rural refuse and recycling pick-up, and school and bulk collections. QRS has held it since 2011.

QRS is expected to cease providing the services from the end of February after the new successful service provider is announced and begins providing the service.

“QRS’ focus is on civil infrastructure projects - that’s where our strength lies. There are other organisations with the expertise better placed to carry out the waste management contract work.”

Mr Pollock says affected staff learned of the situation in early June. They had 21 days to provide feedback and discuss the situation with QRS managers.

The seven affected staff include two weighbridge operators and five others who have the responsibility of collecting rubbish and recycling.

“Understandably staff are disappointed and we’re helping any who have feelings of fear of frustration. Where possible QRS is helping the employees find alternative employment within the company or elsewhere.”
