Award-winning company offers trade trifecta

Hot on the heels of winning Hawke’s Bay Chamber of Commerce Supreme Business of the Year, Quality Roading and Services is offering a trifecta of career opportunities.

The civil construction company is already Wairoa’s second-biggest employer and is looking to expand on the back of a phenomenal year, says chief executive Nigel Pollock.

“Winning the award is helping position QRS as a desired place to have a job.”

Mr Pollock says the company is looking for three interested hardworking staff who want to build a career from the ground up.

“These opportunities would suit school-leavers or people keen to kick start a career in roading infrastructure management and construction.”

The three successful applicants will start in the road maintenance crew with a focus on traffic management and labouring. The work is outside and varied. Labourer Trent Zeilstra says he got into civil contracting because he wanted to work out in the open and see more of the region.

“The courses I would like to do while I am here are my wheels, tracks and rollers, and I wouldn’t mind getting my class 2 driver’s license,” says the keen hunter and fisherman.

“No problem,” says Mr Pollock who adds that the training options for QRS staff are many and varied. The company doubled its training budget from last year and has 33 staff currently working towards apprenticeships including heavy diesel mechanics to road construction. Endorsements for special-type vehicles are also available and Trent is already well on the way with his training. Some staff have also branched into project management and engineering.

Mr Pollock says QRS offers competitive pay and overtime rates, and guaranteed hours each week with staff paid a minimum of 45 hours a week.

“One way we can guarantee those hours is that over the busy months hours from 45-50 are ‘banked’ rather than paid in that pay period. In the slow season staff can have their hours topped up by the release of time banked hours.”

Mr Pollock says that not many people probably realise, but QRS also insists upon a company-wide Christmas period close-down so employees can rest and recharge.

Potential applicants need to have a full driver’s licence (or be close to getting it) and be able to pass a pre-employment and future random hair follicle tests for Class A and other drugs.

“Passing the drug test is paramount. There is no place at QRS for staff displaying poor decision-making or judgement errors because of substance abuse.”

Also paramount is a desire from the applicant to share in QRS’s company values: equality, pride, and respect.

“An aptitude to work hard for your own and the company’s success will take anyone joining the company a long way.”

Anyone interested in applying for a job can visit www.qrs.co.nz/vacancies and fill out a Job Application Form. Drop the completed form back to the office, post it to PO Box 83 Wairoa, or email it to jobs@qrs.co.nz.

Positions available to start from Monday 11 January 2021 or earlier depending on individual circumstances.
