Regional bridge repairs two-thirds of QRS’s construction mahi

Bridge repairs and reconstruction make up about two-thirds of Quality Roading and Service’s construction division work programme right now.

Raupani Bridge at Waihua Valley Road (pictured) was fine before Cyclone Gabrielle but, like many others in the region, it is now seriously undermined. During the cyclone, Waihua River rose to about eight metres. A build-up of woody debris created a whirlpool effect eroding the banks and causing a drop-out under the abutment.

To secure the bridge, QRS is building up a revetment of limestone rocks brought over from the quarry at Waerenga-o-Kuri.

This project is being done as part of a package of four bridges for Wairoa District Council - the others being Avalon Bridge, Tutaekuri Bridge and Kotari No 1 Bridge.

Site supervisor Aperhama Moses and other QRS construction crew members expect to be on site at Raupani Bridge for another month adding impact-resistant material to the banks, rebuilding the road, and eventually sealing the approach.

Thank you for your continued patience while we complete bridge work around the region.
