Peter Wairau, the communicator

Peter Wairau doesn’t really have a word to describe a big chunk of the work he does at QRS.

The health and safety, and training manager, part of his role is easy to describe, but there’s a whole other job he does too.

“I guess you could call it a communicator,” says Peter, who is Ngāi Tahu, Rongomaiwahine and Ngāti Kahungunu.

On any given day Peter might help someone with a written application, mentor a staff member as they make a career decision, or help carry out an audit following a near-miss situation.

”I’m here for everyone and in a way I connect the people downstairs with the people upstairs.”

Peter is also involved with ensuring staff are taking advantage of the health care offered including hearing checks, and annual nurse check-ups. Health insurance and free gym memberships are organised for the staff, as well as on-site physio for anyone who needs it.
