COVID-19 testing at QRS helps form community picture

Quality Roading and Service staff helped health officials with surveillance testing this morning in a collective effort to keep the COVID-19 virus under control.

“We are really proud of those who volunteered to be tested and have done their bit to get New Zealand to alert level 2,” says QRS people and capabilities manager Jeremy Harker.

Today there were two new COVID-19 cases confirmed in New Zealand.

Surveillance testing of people without symptoms of COVID-19 is happening across the country so health officials can ensure no virus is going undetected.

As the sun was coming up over Wairoa, six Queen St Practice nurses performed the tests wearing full personal protective equipment.

The testing area was created just outside QRS’s main office and staff were staggered through the process to maintain social distancing.

Mr Harker says QRS was happy to take part in surveillance testing. “We hope the tests will help build a picture of whether there is any community transmission happening in this region.”

He says QRS staff travel to work from all corners of the district and therefore provide a good geographical sample of the local population.

Initially, staff were a little apprehensive about the test, but upon learning it was a throat swab, they were only too happy to step up and help, he added.

The test specimens have been driven to Napier and results are expected in 48 hours.

Queen St Practice Manager Marion Terry says the random testing went well and everyone who was tested will be contacted with their results.

“The QRS staff we tested this morning will help provide the health sector with increased confidence in its data and an overall picture of COVID-19 in the district. Thank you to the staff members who took part.”
