Quality Roading and Services staff and Currie Construction from Gisborne successfully replaced the collapsed Mōrere Culvert north of Nūhaka, on State Highway 2, last week.
Together, they ensured any potential problems that may arise during the 48-hour work programme began were catered for by having back-up machines for critical plant items in case of mechanical failure. Mechanics and hydraulic technicians were also on standby for the night shift work. Backfill material was oversupplied to cater for unavailability at night.
The existing 1.5m diameter galvanised steel culvert had weakened over time due to corrosion, constant ground movement, and slips. This compromised culvert was replaced with two heavy-duty plastic pipelines that were installed at different levels to cope with both normal and deluge rainfall.
The surrounding area of Morere Hill is prone to ground movement so the new culverts were installed higher than the previous one so that regular inspections to check for blockages or dislodgements will be easier.
